The most difficult situations in human relationships are those where someone has gotten bitter. Unless you decide that you will not become bitter no matter what happens to you, then you are almost guaranteed to eventually become bitter.
Bitterness is a killer. You should think of it like you think of a deadly virus. Not only will it slowly destroy you, but it also has the power to destroy those around you whom you love.
Bitterness begins when the seed of an offense is planted in the soil of your heart. When you review the offense over and over, you push the seed under the soil and water it and it puts down a root. Since this root is underground, you may not even know it is there! But when it produces the bad fruit of anger and malice and vengeance, others will see it.
You can choose to get bitter or to not do so.
God’s antidote for the poison of bitterness is the powerful grace of God.
