Description
John Wesley obviously prized the teaching of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount, for he expended a great deal of ink and paper expounding upon it. In his characteristically methodical style, he plumbs the depths of this condensation of Christ's principles and commandments. The Son of God is showing the only way to heaven; there is no other way. All other paths lead to destruction
Wesley lived in a day not unlike our own, when famous apostates rose up to challenge the truths of the gospel. Now, when Christ's followers are shouted down in the name of "tolerance," this is a refreshing, unwavering declaration of the Way, Truth and the Life that is still highly relevant.
But Wesley insists there is more here than answers to unbelievers. He describes how Jesus refutes all the wrong thinking concerning salvation which would ever arise in the Church itself - the mistakes, errors and even heresies that may apply in every generation since these immortal words of the Messiah hung in the Galilean air. Wesley describes this as “the whole plan… the sum of all true religion.”
